Overview
Ratangad Fort, often referred to as a ‘jewel’ among the hill forts of Maharashtra, is a popular trekking destination that combines historical significance with breathtaking natural beauty. Perched at an elevation of 4,255 feet, it overlooks the picturesque Bhandardara region, which is also renowned for the annual Bhandardara Fireflies Festival. From the summit, trekkers are treated to panoramic views of notable peaks such as Kalsubai—the highest peak in Maharashtra—as well as Alang, Kulang, and Katarabai. The famous Konkan-Kada cliff and several cascading waterfalls are also visible from this vantage point, adding to the fort’s scenic appeal.
Ratangad is part of the Ajoba Hill range and offers more than just natural beauty. Its historic caves, carved into the rock face, can accommodate dozens of trekkers, making it a suitable location for overnight stays. These caves add a sense of ancient mystery to the trek, connecting visitors with the Maratha legacy. The base village for the trek is Ratanwadi, known for its charming rural setting and the ancient Amruteshwar Temple, a must-visit for history and architecture enthusiasts. With an easy to moderate grade of endurance, Ratangad is ideal for both beginners and seasoned trekkers looking for a rewarding yet manageable adventure.
