Overview
Embark on a breathtaking Himalayan adventure with Backpackclan’s Sandakphu Trek, one of India’s most scenic and rewarding high-altitude treks. Following the majestic Singalila Ridge, this trek reaches Sandakphu, the highest peak in West Bengal, towering at an altitude of 11,926 ft. The trail offers a unique experience as it weaves along the India-Nepal border, presenting panoramic views of the four tallest peaks in the world—Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, and Makalu. Trekkers will journey through enchanting landscapes dotted with alpine flora, such as vibrant rhododendrons, fir, birch, and bamboo trees. Weather on the trek varies significantly, with pleasant summers, chilling winter nights dropping to -11°C, and monsoons arriving by June. Spring, however, unveils rare alpine blooms, making this one of the best seasons to experience the trek.
The trek begins from Chitrey, a serene Himalayan hamlet that serves as the base camp. Along the trail, you’ll traverse through the stunning Singalila National Park and stay in cozy accommodations—ranging from tourist lodges and private lodges to the warmth of local homestays, offering cultural immersion and comfort.
Your journey with Backpackclan starts at New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP). To reach NJP, travelers can take a direct train from New Delhi (approx. 21 hours) or fly into Bagdogra Airport, the nearest airport. Alternatively, a recommended route is to fly from Delhi to Kolkata and then take an overnight train to NJP.
Inclusions/Exclusions
Drive from New Jalpaiguri to Chitrey / Manebhanjan (90 km)
Your adventure begins as you assemble at New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP) by 9:00 AM. Pickup can also be arranged from Siliguri or Bagdogra, based on your convenience. The drive to Manebhanjan or Chitrey takes around 5–6 hours, with scenic views and rest stops along the way. On arrival, check into your lodge or homestay, freshen up, and enjoy some local sightseeing. Witness a mesmerizing Himalayan sunset before retiring for the night.
Trek from Chitrey to Tumling (9 km)
After an early breakfast, begin your trek to Tumling, a serene Himalayan hamlet at 2,900 meters. The well-marked trail offers a gentle ascent and introduces your first views of Mt. Kanchenjunga. As you walk along the India-Nepal border, you’ll encounter Border Security Force (BSF) posts where ID verification is required. En route, explore the quaint Meghma Monastery before descending into Tumling. Arrive before sunset to witness panoramic views from the Singalila Ridge, followed by dinner and overnight stay at the lodge.
Trek from Tumling to Kalapokhri (12 km)
Rise early for a spectacular sunrise and begin your trek to Kalapokhri, situated at 3,100 meters. The journey, taking about 6–7 hours, winds through lush coniferous forests, Nepalese villages like Jaubari, and Indian settlements such as Gairibas. After lunch at Kaiyakata, the trail leads through dense stretches of birch and rhododendron forests. Upon reaching Kalapokhri, settle into your lodge and enjoy a warm dinner before resting for the night.
Trek from Kalapokhri to Sandakphu (6 km)
Begin an early morning trek to the much-anticipated Sandakphu Ridge, the highest point in West Bengal at 11,926 ft. Though relatively short, the trek involves a steep ascent through forested ridges lined with fir and birch trees. Upon reaching the summit, soak in the unrivaled views of the Himalayan range, including the towering Kanchenjunga massif. Later, enjoy a short walk along Phalut Road to witness a breathtaking sunset before returning to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Trek from Sandakphu to Srikhola (16 km)
Greet the day with a sunrise over Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and the Three Sisters—a memory to last a lifetime. After breakfast, start your descent toward Srikhola, a journey that takes about 8 hours. The trail transitions from dense coniferous woods to bamboo forests, passing the scenic village of Gurdum, where you’ll break for lunch. Continue trekking through serene landscapes until you reach Srikhola. Check into your homestay or lodge for a well-earned rest.
Drive from Srikhola to New Jalpaiguri (150 km)
After an early breakfast, check out from your stay and begin the return journey to New Jalpaiguri. The scenic drive marks the end of your trekking experience with us. Transport charges are shared among the group. Depart with unforgettable memories of the Himalayas and the Sandakphu trail.
