Overview
Discover the magic of the Manikgad monsoon trek
“A lush, misty hill fort near Panvel. Trek through green forests, explore historic ruins, and soak in panoramic valley views atop this hidden Maratha fort.”
Derived from the word ‘Manik’, meaning precious beads, Manikgad Fort truly is a hidden jewel tucked into the hills near Panvel in Maharashtra’s Raigad district. Come monsoon, the fort blooms into vibrant greenery, turning each trail and ruin into a scene from a dream.
Built in the 18th century by Sarkhel Kanhoji Angre—tasked with overseeing the all-important Maval-to-coast trade route—Manikgad still whispers stories of Maratha strategy and architecture, even in its gently crumbling form. Today, it stands proud as both a nature retreat and a living history lesson.
The trek begins approximately 27 km from Panvel and offers two equally scenic routes: the forested track via Katarwadi or the temple-lined approach through Dhangarwadi. Both paths converge after an hour’s climb, leading you to the fort’s grand entry, the Maha Darwaja, where a detailed Ganesha sculpture on the second gate invites admiration.
Once inside, you’ll discover remnants of the past: a carved stone gate, an age-old flour grinder, and a cluster of cisterns—more than four in total—with the largest nestled atop. Climb to the top and you’ll be rewarded with sweeping valley views, a small shrine, and a structure known as Chunyacha Ghana—silent witnesses to centuries gone by.
While the trail is moderate in difficulty, the constant ascent demands stamina. But with each step, you’re rewarded: fresh mountain air, panoramic Sahyadri vistas, and the joy of stepping away from city noise.
This monsoon, join Backpackclan for an unforgettable day where history meets nature—where every trail reveals beauty and every ruin tells a story.
