- Drive Through Pahalgam and Along the Lidder River
As you make your way to Aru, enjoy the breathtaking views of the Lidder River, flowing alongside the road. The journey takes you through lush meadows, pine forests, and small riverside villages. The landscape gradually changes into a picturesque valley, making this drive an experience in itself.
- Arrival at Aru Camp
You’ll reach Aru by late afternoon, ideally around 2:00 PM, ensuring that you arrive before nightfall. Aru is a peaceful, small village nestled in the valley, with around 200 asbestos-roofed huts spread across lush green meadows. The view of the village against the backdrop of towering mountains and the flowing Lidder River is nothing short of enchanting.

- Continue through the Forest and Streams
As you walk further, the trail ascends gently, and you’ll cross two small streams. Both streams are safe for drinking. After crossing the second stream, the path leads you through more pine forests, providing beautiful views of the Riverside and the valley below.
- Reach Lidderwat
The last section of the trek takes you through a lovely fir forest. After approximately 30 minutes, the trail opens into the lush green meadows of Lidderwat, where you can relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. The meadow is a perfect place to camp, surrounded by snow-capped peaks and alpine beauty.

– Trek Through Pine Forests and Grasslands
The trail begins from the PDA huts, following the Lidder River and leading into a pine forest. The path is relatively easy, and soon the pine trees open up to wide grasslands, surrounded by towering mountains. You’ll pass through several small valleys and make your way toward Bhakarwal Shelters by the river.
– Crossing the River and Ascending
The trail continues with streams running along the path, where you can refill your water bottles. After crossing the river over some boulders and a makeshift bridge, you’ll reach the Hamvas clearing. Take a short break at the Gujjar huts, where you can enjoy some tea and snacks.
– Ascent to Shekwas
After the break, the trail ascends gradually, and you’ll enter a silver birch forest (also known as Bhoj trees), which are considered ancient in the region. The trail continues through meadows and two green valleys, leading to Shekwas.
– Arrival at Shekwas
Shekwas is a beautiful, undulating meadow surrounded by snow-patched mountains. This site is one of the best camping spots of the Tarsar Marsar trek, offering a tranquil environment with panoramic views of the valley and surrounding peaks.

– Ridge Trail to Tarsar Lake
As you continue, the path follows a ridge above the stream, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape. After about two hours, you will cross some spectacular ridges, providing sweeping views of the valley. As you move forward, the trail leads you to a conical hilltop, where you’ll catch a glimpse of Tarsar Lake in the distance. The lake, shaped like an almond, begins to come into view, and the excitement builds as you approach.
– Final Approach to Tarsar Lake
From here, the last part of the trek is a bit more challenging, crossing a stream by stepping over rocks and boulders. After this, you’ll arrive at the grasslands of Tarsar, where you’ll set up camp for the night.

– Descend Through Shepherds’ Trail
Follow the shepherds’ trail, which will take you to the middle of the valley. Walk along the stream, surrounded by lush, velvet-like grass. Along the way, you’ll see Bakkarval shelters on the left, and the path continues behind these shelters through a boulder-filled area.
– Cross the Grasslands and Streams
As you continue, the trail passes through lush grasslands. You’ll reach a large pond fed by snowmelt from the surrounding mountains. After about 30 minutes of walking, you’ll reach the end of the meadow.
– Ascend to the Ridge
From here, cross a stream with the help of some boulders, then ascend for 15 minutes through a narrow valley to reach the top of the ridge. At the top, you’ll be greeted by a vast meadow filled with colorful flowers, offering breathtaking views of the valley below and the mountains in the distance.
– Arrive at Sundersar Lake
Continue along the trail, and you’ll soon reach the grassy meadows around Sundersar Lake. This lake is a serene, beautiful spot, and the flat ground makes it an ideal campsite. Set up your tents here and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. The views from the campsite are simply spectacular, making it a perfect place to relax and take in the beauty of Kashmir.

– Ascend to Marsar Ridge
After about 30 minutes, you will reach a pass that leads to a beautiful grassland with gentle trails. From here, you’ll follow the trail across flat grounds, crossing a few small streams along the way. As you climb toward Marsar Ridge, the view will open up to reveal Marsar Lake, which is often hidden under mist and clouds, offering a more elusive and serene experience compared to Tarsar.
– Visit Marsar Lake
Spend some time at Marsar Lake, taking in its quiet beauty. This lake is considered the twin of Tarsar but is less frequently visited, making it feel even more magical and untouched.
– Return to Sundersar and Jagmargi Valley
After visiting Marsar, you will descend back to Sundersar Lake, which will take around 40 minutes. Spend some time in the Sundersar valley, soaking in the serene atmosphere before heading back to Jagmargi Valley. As you make your way back, you’ll again witness lush grasslands and sweeping views, appreciating the natural beauty of the landscape.
– Descend to Homwas
Instead of crossing Tarsar Pass, take a different trail back through Shekwas, which will eventually lead you to Homwas. This section of the trek will take about 30 minutes. Once you arrive in Homwas, you can set up your tents, enjoy a delicious meal after the long day, and rest for the night.

– Lidderwat Pine Forest
As you approach Lidderwat, you’ll pass through a beautiful pine forest. It’s a great spot to take a break and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. This is a perfect place to relax before continuing the trek.
– Continue to Aru
After your break, continue on the trail towards Aru, which is 13 km away. The walk is scenic, with stunning views of the valley as you descend. This part of the trek should take around 4 hours to complete.
– Drive from Aru to Srinagar
Once you reach Aru, vehicles will be arranged to take you back to Srinagar, marking the end of your trek.
